New 3DS vs New 3DS XL – Battery, Brightness, Sound & Charging Show Down

A close look at the battery performance and battery saving features of the New 3DS and New 3DS XL.

The test compares the 2DS, 3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS and New 3DS XL with brightness high, WiFi on and 3D off for a level playing field. Here are the results:

– New 3DS XL – 5:45
– New 3DS – 5:23
– 3DS XL – 5:01
– 2DS – 4:36
– 3DS – 4:05

The New 3DS and New 3DS XL last much longer when 3D is switched off. Perhaps this is because of the super stable feature that uses an infra-red transmitted to see player’s face that may use more power.

The New 3DS lasted almost 2 hours longer by switching the 3D feature off on the unit, compared to our previous test:

We also tested each unit to see which would charge up the fastest. As would be expect the discrepancy here is much less. Here’s how long each unit took to fully charge:
– 2DS – 2:55
– New 3DS – 3:02
– 3DS XL – 3:07
– New 3DS XL – 3:14
– 3DS – 3:16

Finally we also tested the sound quality and volume of each unit. Although this is more a matter of opinion, the New 3DS and New 3DS XL certainly matched the original 3DS for volume — something that was lacking in both the 3DS XL and mono 2DS.
